Jason Guzman is a first generation Mexican American from Chicago, IL. He is a self-taught artist who began his career in visual art in 2023. His work focuses on the history of Mexican craft and he specializes in the Mexican folk art of Papel Picado, a paper cutting technique from Mexico.
In 2022, He was inspired to begin practicing Papel Picado after watching an interview with Mexican folk artist Catalina Delgado-Trunk who specializes in Papel Picado. During the interview she explained the powerful history of papermaking in Mexico as well as the indigenous folklore and mythology that she depicts in her pieces. Later in the interview she explained that the next generation of Papel Picado artists are keeping this tradition alive by using laser cutting machines.
Papel Picado today is hardly considered an established art form. It used purely for decoration or novelties to be packaged, bought, and disposed of. As a result there are sparse resources, archival materials, or documentation to learn from. Often learning as he went, it took one year of research and development before Jason was ready to debut his work. This project required him to figure out the style of Papel Picado, how to use and calibrate a laser machine, as well as how to design artwork in graphic design software; all learned from scratch.
In 2023 Jason applied for particpated in an open call by Open Center for the Arts in Little Village, Chicago for an exhibition called Mi Neighborhood. He also participated in a vendor market in Pilsen, Chicago called Hecho En Festival hosted by Pilsen Arts & Community House. Thus beginning his Papel Picado journey.
